Slope Safety is
Everyone’s Responsibility.

Safe Slopes Colorado is a coalition of skiers and riders of all ages and backgrounds — parents, grandparents, weekend warriors, safety experts, and healthcare professionals — who share a mission to make skiing and riding as safe as possible at Colorado’s ski resorts. We believe that safety is everyone’s responsibility and the more we know, the safer we are. After all, safe slopes benefit us all: skiers, riders, resort operators, patrollers, instructors, hospitals, doctors, local communities, and the state of Colorado.

Danilda Streeb, aunt of teenager who died in transport from Echo Mountain on Dec. 24, 2020 (quoted in Colorado Sun article)

“This is not about destroying an industry. It’s about accountability.”

Horst Abraham, U.S. and Colorado Ski Hall of Fame Inductee

“Transparency of accident data and publicly sharing best safety practices will assure ski area patrons that ski areas hold customer safety as their highest priority. Colorado is the well-established leader of the U.S. winter sports industry and should act as a role model for the rest of the nation and the world.”

Senator Tammy Story (bill co-sponsor)

“Consumers and regulators alike should have access to basic safety information from our ski resorts.”

Sen. Jessie Danielson (bill co-sponsor)

“There is a clear need for transparency from ski resorts when it comes to how they manage safety and the results of those efforts.”

Mark Stangl, Steamboat, Colo.

“I applaud our local leaders for moving this forward and know that thousands of skiers and riders across the state agree with me in supporting this common-sense measure.”

Russ Rizzo, statewide coordinator, Safe Slopes Colorado (quoted in Westword article)

"As these incidents make clear, there is a wide ripple effect of serious accidents. That’s why we aim to prevent the ones we can. That starts with transparency."

Summit Daily editorial

“Hold Colorado’s ski industry accountable on death, injury data.”

Stan Gale, U.S. Ski Patrol (1968-2019)

“Ski operators should disclose details of serious accidents that happen on the trails and slopes they manage and tell the public how they use—or do not use—data analysis to mitigate slope safety.”

Dr. Robert McIntyre, Colorado trauma surgeon

“CDPHE data obtained by the Safe Slopes Colorado coalition documents what the trauma treatment community already knows and puts focus on the importance of effective safety management and improvement at the state's ski areas.”
